Darwin's Local TV Hire Specialists
Every TV we hire in Darwin comes as a complete, ready-to-use package. Smaller screens arrive with their standard desk stand so you can set up on any table or counter in minutes. Our larger screens — 65 inches and above — include a truss mount, giving you the flexibility to position your display at the right height for any venue without needing a dedicated table or furniture.
Our 40 inches and larger are Smart TVs. That means built-in apps, crisp displays, and versatile connectivity — please read our connection guide below to make sure you bring the right setup for your content.
We supply an HDMI cable with every hire. All you need to bring is your content and, if your device doesn't have an HDMI output, an appropriate adapter.

How to Connect Your Content to a Hire TV in Darwin
One of the most common questions we get at RentEvent is: "Can I just plug in my laptop and run my PowerPoint?" The answer is yes — but it depends on what you're connecting. Here's everything you need to know before your event.
Smart TVs: What They Can and Can't Do On Their Own
All of our hire TVs 40 inches and above are Smart TVs. A Smart TV has built-in apps and can connect to the internet — but it runs its own operating system, not Windows or macOS. This is an important distinction.
A Smart TV cannot run PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides (in editing mode), Excel, or any other software that lives on your computer. If your presentation or content lives in a program on your laptop or desktop, you will need to physically connect that computer to the TV using an HDMI cable.
The good news: we supply an HDMI cable with every hire. In most cases, connecting your computer is straightforward and takes less than a minute.
When You Can Use the USB Input (No Computer Needed)
The USB input on a Smart TV is designed for one specific job: playing media files directly from a USB drive. If your content is saved as compatible files on a USB stick, you may not need a computer at all.
USB playback works well for:
- A photo or image slideshow (JPEG, PNG files)
- Pre-exported video files (MP4 is the most reliable format)
- Simple looping display content saved as video
USB playback does NOT work for:
- PowerPoint (.pptx) files — the TV cannot open or run these
- Keynote files
- PDFs (not reliably supported on most Smart TV USB players)
- Anything that requires software to display
- Live or interactive content
The simple rule: if you can save it as an MP4 or a folder of JPEGs, USB will work. If it lives in a program on your computer, connect the computer.
Connecting Your Computer via HDMI
This is the most reliable method for presentations, websites, video calls, and anything else that runs on your device. We include an HDMI cable in every TV hire package.
What you need on your end:
- A full-size HDMI output on your laptop or desktop — plug straight in, nothing extra needed
- No HDMI port? You'll need to supply your own adapter. Common adapters include:
- USB-C to HDMI (most modern MacBooks and many Windows laptops)
- Mini DisplayPort to HDMI (older MacBooks and some Windows machines)
- VGA to HDMI (older laptops — note: audio will not carry over VGA)
Adapters are widely available from electronics retailers. If you're unsure what port your device has, check the manufacturer's website or bring your laptop into any computer store before your event — don't leave it to the day.
Once connected, set the TV input to HDMI and your computer should detect it as an external display. From there, run your presentation, browser, or any application exactly as you would on your own screen.
TV Hire Darwin — Frequently Asked Questions
Do your hire TVs come with a stand?
Yes. Our 32" and 40" TVs include the manufacturer's desk stand as part of the hire package, suitable for any stable flat surface. Our 65", 70", and 75" TVs include a truss mount system, which allows the screen to be positioned at height without any furniture.
Are your hire TVs Smart TVs?
All of our TV hire packages 40 inches and above are Smart TVs. Our 32" package is a standard Full HD display.
Can I run PowerPoint on a hire TV?
Not directly from the TV. Smart TVs run their own operating system and cannot open PowerPoint or other computer software. To run a PowerPoint presentation you will need to connect your laptop to the TV via HDMI. We supply the HDMI cable — you may need to bring an adapter if your laptop doesn't have a full-size HDMI port.
Do you hire TVs in Darwin only?
Yes — RentEvent is a Darwin-based hire business and we service the Darwin local area. Visit rentevent.com.au to check availability and place your order online.
Do I need to provide any cables?
We supply an HDMI cable with every hire. If your computer or device does not have a standard HDMI output (for example, if it only has USB-C or Mini DisplayPort), you will need to supply your own adapter.
What sizes of TV can I hire from RentEvent?
RentEvent offers TV hire in Darwin in the following sizes: 32 inch, 40 inch, 65 inch, 70 inch, and 75 inch.
